There are people who look out for me. Through their actions, they reminded me that I am loved and that I am truly part of a family who look out for one another.
It began at dinner 24 hrs ago. Fast food joint, everyone grabbing food, my friend and I finally getting our meals and looking for a place to sit. We go to join a table which has one seat left and another table next to it. She takes the remaining seat.
Hey, I get the whole table to myself. Right?
There's a small gap between our tables but the gulf is wide enough that the conversation seems to have difficulty crossing just like those Egyptians at the Red Sea.
I figure that I'm there to eat so I dig in. I also figure that it's probably one of the last times I hang out with a crew young enough that some of them had been students of mine. Awkwardness springs to mind.
Halfway through my meal, bro #1 appears with his meal and settles at a table full of laydees. Yup, being the friendly, loveable young chap he is, everyone wants to hang out with him. The lads make it known to him that they're not happy and they exchange arm motions across the room. He catches my eye and unbeknownst to me, makes a decision as I turn my back.
A minute later, he makes his presence felt and drops into the seat across from me. When questioned about his change of mind, he simply replies, well Laney was sitting by herself. And continues to eat.
His perception astounded me. While others were clamouring for his attention, he remained alert to the needs of others, specifically mine.
Bro #2 surprised me. His action was simple but I've never had any guy do this for me before. After exploring possible photo shoot locations for an upcoming event, we returned to the car. Before I realised what he was doing, he had stepped in front of me, unlocked my door, holding it open.
It took a few seconds to register that he was waiting for me to step in after which he closed it behind me.
I'd seen him do this for his wife previously and secretly, I'd always hoped that one day, someone would do the same for me.
I am reminded that we can show others that we care with simple deeds and that sometimes even the simplest action can have a huge impact in someone else's life.
